Honouring 80 Years Since the Liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau

January 27, 2025, marks 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and extermination camp. On this day, we remember the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust, including two million children, alongside millions of non-Jews persecuted and murdered by the Nazi regime and its collaborators. As time passes, remembrance becomes even more vital to honour the victims and preserve the legacy of survivors.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day is a chance to educate ourselves and carry forward the stories of those who suffered. Elie Wiesel, Holocaust survivor and Nobel laureate, captured this responsibility in his memoir, Night: 
Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed.
Never shall I forget that smoke.
Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a silent sky.
Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith forever.
Never shall I forget the nocturnal silence that deprived me for all eternity of the desire to live.
Never shall I forget those moments that murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to ashes.
Never shall I forget those things, even were I condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never. 
Wiesel’s words remind us of the enduring pain of memory but also its power to inspire action. ‘For the dead and the living, we must bear witness,’ he wrote, urging us to preserve the lessons of the Holocaust.

Our responsibility of remembrance extends beyond renowned figures like Elie Wiesel to the extraordinary individuals within our own communities—people like Auschwitz survivor Noah Klieger, whose stories continue to inspire and guide future generations.
For Jacob Benbunan, meeting Noah Klieger was a profoundly moving experience. <a href="https://www.elmundo.es/internacional/2018/01/25/5a67825646163ff5258b4633.html#" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Klieger’s story</a> of resilience and his commitment to sharing the horrors he endured left an indelible impression. Tragically, Klieger passed away just six months after their meeting, but his legacy reminds us that memory is a tool for change and a call to action.
